MSUís Patrasc, Doubles Team Into Round Of 16 At ITA Southern Regionals

Doubles duo Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran will advance into the round of 16 along with Georgiana Patrasc in the ITA Southern Regional.

AUBURN, Ala. – As the ITA Southern Regional Championships got underway Friday, Mississippi State women’s tennis found success in singles and doubles as a Bulldog singles player and a doubles team each moved into the round of 16 of the event.

All-SEC sophomore Georgiana Patrasc, seeded 5-8 in singles, opened play with a win against Iris Verboven of Ole Miss 6-2, 7-6(4). Patrasc closed her action of the day with another win over Lyubov Dorofeeva of Troy 6-2, 6-3. Those wins vaulted her into the round of 16 in singles on Saturday.

In doubles Friday, the 48th-ranked and fourth-seeded MSU duo of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran defeated Julia Jones and Iris Verboven of Ole Miss 8-4 to move into round of 16 action.

Also notching a main draw win Friday in singles was State true freshman Timea Guibe, as she downed Julia Kral of McNeese State 4-6, 6-0, 2-0, when Kral retired due to injury in the third set. Guibe advanced to the second round but dropped her match to top-seeded and 18th-ranked Pluen Burgmans of tourney host Auburn 6-2, 6-1.

In other singles play, the senior Perper, seeded 9-16 in singles, dropped her first match against Gabriel Otero of LSU 6-4, 6-4 but came back with a victory in her consolation match against Monica Mitta of South Alabama 6-2, 6-4.

Senior Rosie Dion dropped her first match against Laure Mastuskova of South Alabama 6-2, 6-3, while Petra Ferancova and Naomi Tran completed action for MSU in singles, also falling in their matches, Ferancova 6-1, 7-6(4) to Stephanie Barnett of Nicholls State and Tran 6-2, 6-3 to Medy Blankvoort of ULM. Dion, Tran and Ferancova later fell in consolation action as well.

Action will resume on Saturday at 8 a.m. CT beginning with duo Perper and Tran in round of 16 doubles, competing against Stephanie Barnett and Katya Nakonechnaya of Nicholls State. Patrasc will begin singles action at 1 p.m. CT against Danielle Spielmann of Alabama, also in the round of 16. Perper and two of State’s doubles teams will continue consolation action Saturday as well.
