MSU Fifth, Peng Tied For Lead After Record-Breaking Two-Round 137

AUSTIN, Texas – Rainy weather continued Monday for the second round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational as the Mississippi State women’s golf team notched a 3-over-par 291 to earn a fifth-place sitting. Freshman Jessica Peng fired a school-record 7-under-par 137 to earn a share of the lead entering Tuesday’s final round.

Along with MSU’s opening-round 284, the Bulldogs are primed for their program-record 15th-consecutive regular season top-10 finish.

“Tough conditions today but the girls continued to have a champion mentality,” current MSU head coach and former Texas Longhorn Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “They were in rain and saturated course conditions at times but never gave up. I am very proud of their commitment to excellence no matter the circumstances.”

Peng fired a 2-under-par 70 second-round tally to follow up her record-setting 67 in Sunday’s opening round. The rookie birdied the 15th and 18th holes to remain tied atop the leaderboard.

After just her third over-par round of the year, All-American Ally McDonald bounced back to shoot an even-par second round to stay at 2-over for the event. McDonald started brightly with a birdie on her first hole and added two more on holes 10 and 12.   

Junior Rica Tse notched a 2-over-par 74 after her first-round 69 tied her career-best. Her two-round 143 earns her a spot in the Top 20 with 18 holes remaining. Ji Eun Baik is 4-over after rounds of 74 and 75, which included three consecutive birdies on holes 12, 13 and 14 Monday afternoon.

Mary Langdon Gallagher closed out the MSU lineup with a 76 to improve on her 77 from Sunday. Blaise Carabello, who is competing as an individual, sits at 155 after her first two rounds.

No. 1 UCLA holds the top spot on the leaderboard at 13-under-par 563. The Bruins are led by Allison Lee who used a 4-under-par 68 round to pull even Peng for the lead.

The final round will begin with an 8:15 a.m. CT shotgun Tuesday morning.
