TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Day three of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships saw Mississippi State men’s tennis senior Malte Stropp continue his run in singles, pulling out a three-set win to advance to the tournament’s semifinals on Sunday.
Stropp faced 105th-ranked and eighth-seeded Dan Cochrane of Auburn on Saturday in quarterfinals. Ranked No. 40 nationally and the tourney’s No. 3 seed, Stropp dropped the first set 6-3, but fired back in the second by the same score, pushing the match to a deciding third set. Despite being broken early in the third, Stropp broke back and earned a break later in the set to put the match in MSU hands, as he claimed victory 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Stropp now moves on to face Ole Miss’ No. 65 ranked and fifth-seeded William Kallberg in semifinal play on Sunday. The winner will advance to the finals on Monday and earn a spot in the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 7-10.
In doubles competition, MSU’s sixth-ranked and top-seeded duo of Jordan Angus and Stropp battled Tulane’s Alex Van Cott and Sebastian Rey, falling in a close 8-4 decision in the round of 16. State’s tandem of Florian Lakat and Tassilo Schmid faced off against LSU’s third-seeded team of Boris Arias and Chris Simpson, also in the round of 16. The match was pushed to a tiebreaker, where the LSU duo pulled away to capture an 8-7(2) victory.
