TULSA, Okla. – On day one of main draw play at the 2013 ITA All-American Championships, Mississippi State’s sixth-ranked doubles squad of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp moved into Friday’s round of 16 after downing their third ranked opponent of the fall Thursday night.
Angus and Stropp, the No. 4 seed in the event, opened up the doubles main draw against Texas’ 29th-ranked duo of David Holiner and Nick Naumann. Both sides opened the match trading holds until the Longhorn tandem earned a break to take a 4-2 lead. Following a break back from Angus and Stropp in the next game to put the match back on serve, both sides again traded holds to force a tiebreaker. From there, the Bulldog team edged the Longhorn team for the victory, taking the match 8-7(5).
Angus and Stropp move on to face Memphis’ 18th-ranked David O’Hare and Joe Salisbury Friday in a match scheduled to start not before noon. The Tiger duo earned their way into the Round of 16 after defeating San Francisco’s Bernando Saraiva and Nils Skajaa 8-4.
The Bulldogs also saw play in singles action Thursday from Stropp, ranked 40th in the nation. The Bulldog senior battled Texas A&M’s Harrison Adams, ranked No. 67, but fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Stropp then moved to main draw consolation play, where he faced SEC foe, 95th-ranked Daniil Proskura of Alabama. Proskura took the match 6-2, 6-3 to eliminate MSU’s run in singles play in the tournament.
