Flushing, N.Y. - With a second chance against his in-state rival, Mississippi State freshman Romain Bogaerts did not disappoint Friday, as the Huppaye, Belgium, native advanced to quarterfinal play in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships with a big upset. He then fell in the quarterfinals against the tournament's top seed.
Less than a month ago, Bogaerts fell in a close decision to Ole Miss' fifth-ranked Nik Scholtz in the title match of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships in Auburn, Ala., giving Scholtz his automatic bid to New York. However, in their rematch Friday, Bogaerts came out hot, taking the first set 6-1. The two battled to a 3-3 tie in the second set before Scholtz pushed ahead to force a final set. Nevertheless, Bogaerts was determined to take victory this time, winning the final set and taking the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
With that win, Bogaerts advanced to play the tourney's top seed in eighth-ranked Alex Domijan of Virginia. The two went back and forth to start, before Domijan took the first set 6-4. MSU's freshman called out a trainer prior to second set, deciding to continue play. Domijan started off fast in the second and never looked back, taking the match from Bogaerts 6-4, 6-0.
In quarterfinals doubles play Friday, the No. 41 State duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp took on Auburn's No. 24 and top-seeded team of Daniel Cochrane and Andreas Mies, a rematch from the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships earlier in the fall. The Bulldog team pushed the Tigers to the edge, but could not claim victory as Cochrane and Mies took the match 9-7.
