Athens, Ga. - At the same venue where they began their fall slate, the Mississippi State men's tennis squad found great success during day one of the Bulldog Scramble Friday.
State opened the Georgia-hosted event with doubles play, fielding two teams for day one of the round-robin tournament. The MSU rookie duo of Pedro Dumont and Stefan Vinti defeated Kentucky's Michael Binder and Brett Johnson with ease 8-2. The State tandem of Zach White and Ethan Wilkinson did not find similar success, dropping their match to Ruygi Hirooka and Maks Gold of Kentucky 8-2.
Two rounds of singles were played today in Athens Friday, with three Bulldogs competing in the first go-around and all four competing in the second session.
MSU's White defeated UK's Johnson in straight-sets 6-2, 6-1. Vinti also earned a straight-set win, defeating Kentucky's Michael Binder 6-3, 6-1. Dumont dropped his match to UK's Maks Gold 7-6(2), 6-1.
In the second session of singles play, three Bulldogs came out successful. Dumont defeated Alabama's Rens van der Vis 6-2, 6-3. Vinti dropped his first set, but cruised from there, defeating Stuart Kenyon 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2. White defeated the Crimson Tide's Harris Barnard 6-3, 6-2.
MSU's Wilkinson dropped his lone singles match of the day, losing to East Tennessee State's Roger Ordeig 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-0.
The round-robin tournament will continue Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
