State Duo Claims Doubles Title At USTA/ITA Southern Regional
AUBURN, Ala. - Mississippi State's Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp ran the table in Auburn and ended Sunday as the doubles champion at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Indoor Championships. With the victory, the MSU duo earned a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held in New York, N.Y., from Nov. 8-11.
State's Angus and Stropp started their day with an 8-4 defeat of Alabama's Daniil Proskura and David Vieyra to advance to the title match. The Bulldog duo then captured the title with a convincing 8-3 victory against Southern Mississippi's Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin.
"Great job by Jordan and Malte," head coach Per Nilsson said. "They really came together as a team and are playing better with each tournament."
Frost and Goodwin reached the title match by defeating State's James Chaudry and Stefan Vinti 8-1 in semifinal play.
In singles play, freshman Romain Bogaerts took down Alabama's Becker O'Shaugnessey 6-1, 7-6(1) to earn a spot in Monday's singles main draw championship match. The Huppaye, Belgium, native will face in-state rival Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss, ranked fifth nationally and the top seed this weekend, for the title at 10 a.m. CT. A win would send Bogaerts to New York with Angus and Stropp for the National Indoors.
In singles consolation play Sunday, MSU's Zach White dropped his match to Ole Miss' Johan Backstrom 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.
