AUBURN, Ala. - Mississippi State's Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp ran the table in Auburn and ended Sunday as the doubles champion at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Indoor Championships. With the victory, the MSU duo earned a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held in New York, N.Y., from Nov. 8-11.
State's Angus and Stropp started their day with an 8-4 defeat of Alabama's Daniil Proskura and David Vieyra to advance to the title match. The Bulldog duo then captured the title with a convincing 8-3 victory against Southern Mississippi's Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin.
"Great job by Jordan and Malte," head coach Per Nilsson said. "They really came together as a team and are playing better with each tournament."
In singles play, freshman Romain Bogaerts took down Alabama's Becker O'Shaugnessey 6-1, 7-6(1) to earn a spot in Monday's singles main draw championship match. The Huppaye, Belgium, native will face in-state rival Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss, ranked fifth nationally and the top seed this weekend, for the title at 10 a.m. CT.
