Bulldogs Finish Excellent First Day At ITA Southern Regionals
AUBURN, Ala. - Freshman Romain Bogaerts defied seedings and rankings to earn the biggest win of the day, and certainly the biggest of his young career, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs capped a successful first day at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Bogaerts defeated his first-round opponent, Cody Hall of South Alabama 6-1, 6-2 to start off the day and earn a second-round battle with host Auburn's 11th-ranked and second-seeded Andreas Mies. Bogaerts battled in every point, earning a straight-set upset victory against Mies 6-4, 7-5.
Freshman Stefan Vinti was the other Bulldog in first-round play, routing Troy's Athare Mansingh 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Vinti then faced Tulane's Adam Bernstein and found victory again, winning 6-0, 6-1.
State's highest-seeded players in fourth-seeded and 41st-ranekd James Chaudry and fifth-seeded and 47th-ranked Malte Stropp found similar success, both gaining straight-set victories in the second round after first-round byes. Chaudry won against Troy's Sami Ghorbel 6-3, 6-1. Stropp cruised against SEC foe Zack Wilder of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-0.
Bulldogs Jordan Angus and Pedro Dumont were another pair to find success after earning byes. Angus defeated South Alabama's Shaynne Vaezzadeh 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 in a nice comeback while Dumont defeated Tulane's Cedric Rutsaert 6-2, 6-4.
Wrapping up singles play for the day, junior Zach White dropped his match to Auburn's Lukas Ollert 7-6(1), 6-1 in the second round, while senior Ethan Wilkinson fell to 12th-seeded Jarryd Botha of Alabama 6-3, 6-3. Wilkinson will participate in consolation play Friday, receiving a first-round bye.
In the sole doubles match of the day for the Bulldogs, White and Wilkinson were victorious as they teamed up to defeat Tulane's Tom Puetz and Rafael Rondino 8-4 in the opening round.
Angus, Chaudry, Stropp and Vinti will start the day for the Bulldogs Friday, all scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. CT. Angus will face Alabama's No. 59/8th-seeded Daniil Proskura, Chaudry will battle Tulane's Alex Van Cott, Stropp faces Lucian Gheorghe of Auburn, and Vinti matches up against fifth-ranked and the tournament's No. 1 seed Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss.
Bogaerts and Dumont are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., with Bogaerts facing Southern Mississippi's Matt Frost and Dumont facing Samford's Fares Kilani.
In doubles action, all four doubles tandems will see the court, with play scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The No. 41-ranked and second-seeded State duo of Angus and Stropp will face Tulane's Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Dominik Koepfer. Bogaerts and Dumont will match-up against Southern Mississippi's Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin, while Chaudry and Vinti will battle Samford's Fares Kilani and Austin Akers. White and Wilkinson will face the fourth-seeded Ole Miss duo of Johan Backstrom and William Kallburg.
