TULSA, Okla. - Mississippi State men's tennis has advanced one singles player and one doubles team to the final day of play in qualifying action at the ITA All-American Championships.
After being defeated in the first set, Mississippi State freshman Pedro Dumont stormed back to defeat 14th-seed Marton Bots in three sets 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in singles Tuesday. Dumont will face 25th-seeded Rok Bonin of Minnesota for a chance to advance to the main draw on Wednesday.
In doubles play, the 41st-ranked Bulldog duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp earned a second-round victory after a first-round bye. The two defeated North Carolina's Esben Hess-Olesen and Nelson Vick 8-5. The eighth-seeded MSU pair will face the Middle Tennessee State team of Ben Davis and Christopher Lang in the third round Wednesday. They will need to win two matches in order to advance to the main draw.
In other doubles action Tuesday for State, James Chaudry and Zach White dropped their first-round matchup to Nikita Formin and Danil Zelenkov of George Washington in a tight 8-6 affair. MSU's Romain Bogaerts and Dumont also received a first-round bye, but fell to North Florida's Moritz Buerchner and Norbert Nemcsek 8-6 in the second round.
Main draw play is set to begin Thursday, Oct. 4. Stropp and Chaudry received automatic selections into the singles bracket and will be joined by anyone to who can advance out of the qualifying round.
