MSU Cross Country Teams Open Season Saturday At Sewanee
Prior to last year's absence, MSU had competed in the Sewanee Invitational for four years straight, where it also claimed four straight victories.
"I am really looking forward to getting out there and actually seeing our teams compete," coach Houston Franks said. "Our goal is obviously to win, and to do so we have to dust off the cobwebs, lace up and give it all we have on the course."
Picked to finish fifth in the SEC, the Lady Bulldogs are led by All-Region, All-SEC and All-Academic juniors Renee Masterson and Haley Greenwell, who each picked up a couple of Top 5 finishes last season.
"This is going to be a challenge for our girls," added Franks. "Normally our meets are a 5K, but Sewanee has made the change to a 6K. So that will be a great test right off the bat, especially for the younger girls, but I definitely feel we are ready."
2010 SEC Freshman of the Week honoree Nick Perkins will lead the way for the Bulldogs, who are picked to finish sixth in the SEC this season. Joining Perkins in his endeavors will be a host of young sophomores and freshmen who are eager to show off their hard work.
"We are very young on the men's side this year," Franks commented. "So it is going to be nice for them to get that first race out of the way and see exactly where we stand."
Action in Sewanee will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 6K, followed shortly by the men's 8K at 11:00 a.m.
After returning from Tennessee, the MSU will host the Bulldog Invitational on Sept. 17.
